This is a report by Vandy Sok on the participation of our art students in the March. All pictures were taken by the students and the report (with some assistance in wording) is from Vandy.
My name is Vandy and I am a resident of the Wat Opot Community in Cambodia. I am 17 years old and I am one of the Wat Opot artist. In March we took part in the 22nd Dhammayietra March, which was held in District of Oddar Meanchey.
There were six of us who went on the march with our teacher Mr. Rin Houet. We stayed one night in Phnom Penh and were very excited to be in the city. We are standing: Vandy, Meng Ty, Linda, Pesei, and Kneeling: Chanthol and Samnang.
The march was lead by Buddhist Monks for the purpose of bringing Peace to Cambodia. Some of the Monks taught the children about cleanliness.
Other Monks taught about planting trees and taking care of the environment and all of the children were given a book about how to live a good life which they really enjoyed. Many of the children brought food for the monks to eat during the march.
When the meeting was over, the Monks lead the people in singing a song from the book they had given to the people.
When the Monks were finished with their teaching, we went by motorcycle to another Pagoda in the mountains where we got out our art material and did a class with the Monks.
The Monks shared their food with all of us before we started the march.
Then, after napping, we started the march. It was very hot and dusty. The lead monk told people along the way to provide drinking water for all of us who participated in the march.
When we got to the next Pagoda, the Monks went inside the temple to hold a service with the adults, while we started an Art Class with the children.
All of the children had a good time drawing and we enjoyed teaching them some of the things Mr. Houet has shown us.
We are glad that we had the chance to participate in the March and although our part was small we feel it was one step in the process of bringing Peace to Cambodia.
Thanks for reading my report and Thanks to all of you who helped raise the money for us to go. We are all very grateful!
