There is this window of an hour or more every morning when the kids have finished breakfast and our childcare staff have not arrived yet. Roughly from 6:30 to 8:00. And then once the staff have arrived the children have until 9:00 to play until they have to get to their school lessons. These lessons are printed out by their teachers and we pick them up, children complete and we drop them back off before lunch. So this window of time is spent playing, exploring, or eating a 2nd breakfast!
This particular morning, I brought out a box of chalk and gave the younger ones a piece to draw with. They got to work making portraits, designs and one little guy is on a spider kick and draws them constantly.
It wasn’t long before the older primary school age kids wanted to be part of the fun and soon the sidewalk which runs through the middle of our property was covered in children wanting to utilize their creative side.
Soon there was a chorus of “Look, look, look” as their masterpieces began to take shape.
One young guy was tired (maybe just having finished another helping of rice porridge) and as he laid down, I drew around his body with the chalk…that started a frenzy of “ME TOO, ME TOO” and the sidewalk became covered in child size silhouettes which were then personalized, some as accurate as possible and others quite silly!
Nothing was safe from their creativity!
And because we have mischievous boys…the addition of underwear was promptly added to some of them…
After they tired from the portraits, they played games until every piece of chalk was a tiny white nub,
and all we were left with was a few sweet reminders of our home…as we waited for the rain to wash it all away.
