On the 29th of May, after several years of inactivity, we opened our doors to the outside community again. The first meeting, of what hopefully will develop into a monthly support group for young people, was held in our conference room and was both well attended and well received.
The program was organized by Mr. Channa and Mr. Dara, who has just joined our organization and will be responsible for counseling and care of children living within our community.
Emphasis was placed on the fact that the days of the NGO handouts are over and that if people want help, they will have to ask for it and show some evidence that they are going to work to better themselves. With six university graduates and another five presently attending classes, plus a number of Watopotians that have completed or are taking classes in a variety of different trade schools, Wat Opot has gained much experience in finding places for those who are motivated.
Reality hit when instead of giving everyone cash for coming, they were given only the actual cost of the transportation they came in. It didn’t seem to matter however… the young people in attendance seemed very grateful for having been invited.
We will keep you posted on the progress.
