Wat Opot modern jazz dance group has been born!

Post by Volunteer Olivia:

Luise and I both dance back home in Germany and thought this would be a great opportunity to give the children the possibility to get to know a completely different kind of dance. Through Brian’s break-dancing sessions he had organised in December, we knew how much they all love it. However, this time we wanted to show them that a dance that might not seem quite as ‘cool’ as break-dancing can also be loads of fun and at times pretty challenging.

Musical statues as a warm up.

Various coordination exercises, followed by other stretches and warm ups.

As the lessons became more intense many dropped out, but others stuck with it.

We taught them a choreography we came up with to the song ‘We are Young’. Our evening lessons started directly after meditation at 7:00 pm and went on for about an hour. We continued this for just over a week and then performed it the day before I left.

…and turn!

…and out…and turn to the middle…and back! (We are still working on the coordination)

Everyone in their positions!

Dancing 9

The move to “try not to forget” – listen to the music everyone!

Dancing 10

Learning the next new move…is always the funniest part (sometimes even resulting in removing an entire move – always have to stay flexible!)

The first few lessons went well and was really so much fun. Of course at times it seemed rather chaotic. Sometimes until we have them all back in two straight lines a few minutes had passed and it felt like we didn’t get anywhere.  And they soon became tired of our “and AGAIN!” which we annoyed them with each time anew. However, it was incredible how quickly they picked up the moves and each time they finished successfully up until the point we had taught them, they were so proud and excited, one could truly see their enjoyment and enthusiasm, it just filled us with joy.

And of course someone had to control the music!

Here is the finished video!!

 Thanks for watching!
